Conceptualism and matter around the figure of Chris.

Event, Francisco Badilla, Artist:

"Symbol and reality"

On the structure of the mixed techniques, Francisco Badilla incorporates to the classic oil painting some objects and symbols, going to his works a diversity of concepts that with marked presence refer to the crucifixion of Jesus as thematic centersl.

Feelings of peace and calmness inculcated through both atmospheres, merge with details of eyes that investigate the figure of Christ. Recollection and purity seeks to reveal the artist, "The aim of the exhibition is to present an episode of history that marks the thinking of the West, I refer to the crucifixion of Jesus in two visual codes; first, the conceptualism and purity of the non-figurative and object works and, second, the "carnality of the image of Christ crucified as a traditional religious icon, explains the painter.

"Encuentro"

"It is pertinent, I create a reflection towards the presence of Jesus Christ codified in its essence, that is to say the cross, polarized in this exhibition where the aniconism - absence of images - of the purely spiritual, contrasts with the power of the image" adds Badilla.

In the personal need that aspires to be read in the way it was conceived, the artist finds the motivation that guides his creations: "The works arise from my intention to say that God must be present in each one; personal questioning that worries me, motivating my life and my process of artistic expression".

The twelve works that make up "Permanence" correspond to a creative process that began in 2003 and, according to Badilla, shows its evolution through the transition to a more figurative and chromatic proposal. It is in his workshop where the artist finds the physical and vital space to combine the creative phase with a deep personal reflection on his own spirituality.

CONCEPT AND MATTER

Francisco Badilla began to draw with pencils at a very young age. At the age of 15 he takes the brushes and starts his adventure through painting. It is his art teacher at school who motivates him to enter into plastic creation, although he recognizes that his desire to express was already something necessary.

He studied Art at the Catholic University of Temuco, first in a basic art course for a period of two years, and then entered the career of Pedagogy in Plastic Arts and, later, a Bachelor of Arts with mention in Painting.

The confrontation of figuration and religious conceptualism can also be seen in his previous works. Among them is "id", an exhibition inaugurated in 2003, which included some of the works that are now presented in Valdivia, and which, as the artist explains, "allude to the need to go", to walk a path in this life, grasping at the spiritual". That same year, he presented "Cruz = Vida" at the exhibition hall of the University of Temuco, which was the culmination of his academic formation process.

Badilla has explored more figurative painting, but has also ventured into more abstract expressions, pouring into them a greater chromatic richness. He has done religious murals at the Adventist School of Temuco and graphic design for a musical production at the University of the Border, where he is currently working on a mural project.

According to Badilla, painting allows him to "give form to spaces to look at, manipulating the purely visual with the material", a process in which achieving fascination with his work acquires vital relevance for the artist: "It is important to be able to enchant myself" with what I am seeing. The sense of aesthetic appreciation is of special importance in my process".

"Rebellion and Reform"
In a deeper search, painting is for Badilla a way to express his spiritual sense and the fusion of thought with the material. "I like that mixture of being an intellectual and a worker at the same time", says the painter.

His most important inspirational thematics are the image of Jesus Christ - to whom he resorts as the main engine of Western thought - and post-modernity. "The meaning for me is that I try to live my spirituality where painting is a channel that allows me to bring out my questions and my visions about God," the artist concludes.

"Permanence" will be open to the public from August 10th to 26th, at the Ainilebu Hall of the Municipal Cultural Corporation (Avda. Prat 549, phone 219690), from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00. The entrance is free.
